Living in Southampton

Southampton City Council wants to understand more about people and homes in your area and across the whole city.

Residents have been chosen at random to take part in the Living in Southampton Survey.

Opinion Research Services (ORS) is carrying out the survey for Southampton City Council. The survey results will help the Council understand what matters most in your local area, and shape improvements that benefit everyone.

Who are you?

We are Opinion Research Services Ltd, a limited company registered in England and Wales to undertake Market Research and Public Opinion Polling and our registered company number is 02904006.

What is the survey about?

The survey asks about your household and your experiences of living in your local area.  It will help Southampton City Council understand more about people and homes in your area and across the whole city.  Your views will help the Council understand what matters most and plan improvements that benefit everyone.

Who is carrying out the survey?

Opinion Research Services (ORS) is carrying out the survey for the Council.  ORS is an independent research agency and a Market Research Society Company Partner, ensuring the highest professional standards.

Why was my address chosen?

Your address was picked at random from the Council Tax Register, which includes every address in Southampton.  Choosing addresses this way makes sure that the survey reflects a wide range of people from all parts of the city.

Will my information be safe and secure?

Yes – your information will be kept safe and used only for this survey.  You will not receive junk mail or marketing calls by taking part.  Southampton City Council will receive your answers, but not your name, address or anything else that could identify you.  ORS will not keep any identifiable information for more than 12 months.

All of the data that ORS processes is always safe and secure. We will treat all of your information in strictest confidence under UK General Data Protection Regulation. You can read our Privacy Notice for further information about how we manage data.

How do I take part?

Enter your Access Code in the box at the top of this page and you can then click to take part online, or request a paper questionnaire or a large print version with a Freepost return envelope. 

If you already have a paper questionnaire, it can be completed and returned in the Freepost envelope provided.

If you are unable to complete the questionnaire due to health problems, call the survey team on Freephone 0800 324 7006 and they can arrange a time for one of our telephone interviewers to call you.

You can call us before 8:00pm Monday to Friday and before 4:00pm on Saturday.  If you call after this time, you may need to leave a message and we will call you back as soon as possible.

Can I take part in another language?

The online questionnaire is only available in English, although you may set your web browser to translate it into different languages.

Do I have to take part?

No – taking part is voluntary, but your input is important.

The survey relies on the support of households that are chosen, so we hope you will take part.

To opt out, contact the survey team on Freephone 0800 324 7006 or email surveys@ors.org.uk and give them the Access Code printed on your invitation letter.

Can anyone take part?

No – to make sure that the survey results are representative, only those randomly selected households that have been sent an invitation letter can take part.

Who regulates you?

ORS is accredited as a Market Research Society Company Partner and we fully comply with the MRS Code of Conduct. This validates that we operate to the highest professional standards.

ORS also complies with regulations and guidelines from all other relevant regulatory bodies including the Information Commissioner’s Office.

What are my rights?
